Hi All,
It’s been a long time since we have used the Net 96 distribution. Please forward this information.
To anyone with an interest in gifted education in Riverside (kids in Quest or kids who may be in quest in the future): We are having a meeting to discuss the current quest/gifted program and to brainstorm suggestions for improvement and/or possible actions to be taken.
If you cannot attend in person, you may send comments/suggestions and they will be included in the discussion. There has already been quite a bit of informal talking with parents and searches on the web for other programs and standards. Some other districts’ gifted/talented programs and some state standards will be presented at the meeting as well. There will be a short preliminary list of ideas for discussion, but we want to ensure that all ideas from parents are included.

Important information about Registration for Returning District 96 students for next year:
- If you haven’t already done so, please make sure you register your child for next year by Wednesday, June 10th. Forms and information about early registration for returning students is available on the district website (www.district96.org). Minutes from the District 96 BOE Meeting – May 19, 2009 May 25, 2009
Posted by network96 in Uncategorized.add a comment
Official minutes from last BOE meeting can be found here:
http://www.district96.org/2009/05/22/bulletin-from-the-board-4/
In addition to the minutes, there were a few interesting comments made during the Public Comment Section. Two women expressed their opposition to the One-to-one Laptop initiative. The first woman with kids going to St. Mary’s said she was alarmed at the plan, and that it gives the impression that the district has too much money. The other woman who stood up thought that the plan was stupid and a huge expense. (I’m paraphrasing a bit, but I do recall her saying the word ‘stupid’…)
There was also a request for the board not to just approve the entire manual, but to review some of the policies, specifically the flexible boundary policy. The request was to make the neighborhood boundaries truly flexible such that the boundaries may change based on the school with the most available Kindergarten spots.
The highlight, in my opinion, was the fact that the board agreed to consider an exception to the class cap policy for the Smithing family so that their children do not have to be split between Central and Hollywood. The discussion will be on the agenda for next months meeting. PLEASE come out and show support for this family and come to the next meeting!
Next meeting: Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 7:30 p.m. Hauser Jr. High LRC
